CRF organised a hackathon in Campus Melfi (Italy) from 18th to 19th June, 2019 in order to share knowledge on the automated data processing for manufacturing and to start defining a business case for the big data analysis across different processes and plants. The aim of the hackathon was on one side to develop methodologies and tools for the predictive analysis of massive manufacturing data, showing heterogeneous real-time acquisition, massive industrial data management and intelligent decision-making, and on the other side to define the metrics, objectives, AS-IS and TO-BE situations for the implementation of big data analysis in automotive industrial processes.

Many of you may have heard saying that “[Big] Data is the oil of the 21st century” when explaining the importance of data in modern society, and how it is changing our everyday life. After all, it is not by chances that many of the most valued companies in the world base their business in the harvesting of data. However, this analogy can also give an idea of the engineering challenges and the complexity of the whole process that goes from the collection of raw data to the extraction of useful information.

In the era of the Mobility and IoT, the generation of new data by the many applications in every aspect of life, work, industry, consumerism, entertainment, and play has drastically increased. Huge volumes of data coming from various sources in different formats, such as sensors, logs, structured data from an RDBMS, etc. are becoming available at a fast velocity which brings the need for an efficient Analytics Systems.

I-BiDaaS aims to develop a unified Big Data as-a-service solution, which will be easily configured and adopted and will empower Big Data users to easily utilize and interact with Big Data technologies. I-BiDaaS end-users include non-technical business users, who only consume the analytics results, data scientists that configure analytic services and data flows, as well as data integrators, system administrators and analytics application developers.

The 1st I-BiDaaS Info Day - Workshop on Big Data Analytics was successfully held on January 22nd, 2019, under the coordination of the Faculty of Sciences of University of Novi Sad, Dusan Jakovetic, the I-BiDaaS Technical Coordinator, and Ilija Šuša, Co-founder of Content Insights LLC. The participant list included the local/regional community of leading industry experts on big data analytics and data science, as well as a local network of industries interested on leveraging big data and self-service analytics in their businesses. In total, 34 persons from 14 different organisations (12 industry companies and 2 academic organisations) participated in the event, leading to a fruitful discussion.

The I-BiDaaS consortium is bringing several technological advances in the upcoming months, as it will be presented in the technology-focused month 12-deliverables D2.2, D2.3, D3.1, D4.1, D5.1, and D5.2. In short, we are presenting the I-BiDaaS minimum viable product – MVP (D5.2), as well as first reports on data fabrication (D2.2), visualization and monitoring (D2.3), batch analytics (D3.1), complex event processing (D4.1), and resource management (D5.1). We briefly outline here the overall I-BiDaaS MVP solution and the corresponding use case, as well as the batch analytics algorithm that lies at the core of the use case. Other technological advances will be described in the upcoming months’ articles.
